WaiCompass — 1001 Places Worth Finding
WaiCompass is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data the app collects, why, and how it is handled.
WaiCompass uses your device's location and compass heading to calculate the direction and distance to selected places. Location data is processed entirely on your device and is never sent to our servers or any third party.
When you tap “Learn more” on a place, the app sends a search query to the Exa API to retrieve photos, summaries, and interesting facts about that place. The query includes the place name, city, and country. No personal data, device identifiers, or location data is included in these requests.
Search results are cached on your device to avoid repeated requests. You can clear this cache by deleting and reinstalling the app.
The app fetches images from the Wikipedia REST API to display photos of places. These requests include only the place name. No personal data is sent.
WaiCompass does not use any analytics, advertising, or tracking frameworks. We do not collect usage data, behavioral data, or device identifiers. There are no third-party SDKs that track your activity.
WaiCompass does not require registration or login. No email addresses, usernames, or passwords are collected.
The app stores the following data locally on your device:
This data is stored using UserDefaults and never leaves your device.
We do not sell, rent, or share your data with any third party. The only external services the app communicates with are Exa (for place information) and Wikipedia (for images), and these requests contain no personal data.
WaiCompass is suitable for all ages (rated 4+). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
To remove all WaiCompass data, simply delete the app from your device. All locally stored data (favorites, cache, preferences) will be removed.
The browser version at waiwai.is/compass follows the same rules. Your location is read by the browser only after you allow it, is used for the bearing and the distance, and is never sent anywhere. Favorites, the last selected place and the language preference are kept in your browser's local storage; clearing site data removes them. Place details are fetched directly from Wikipedia and contain no personal data.
If this privacy policy is updated, the changes will be posted at this URL. We will notify users of material changes through the app.
